Plan the surface and the installation together

New countertops can change a kitchen without changing every part of it. The right scope depends on the condition of the cabinets, the sink and appliance arrangement, and whether the backsplash will stay.

TGA Kitchens & Remodeling works with Tampa homeowners on countertop replacement and surfaces within larger kitchen and bathroom remodels. We coordinate the selected material, template, fabrication and installation so the details are agreed before cutting begins.

Compare quartz, granite, quartzite and porcelain

  • Quartz: Consistent patterns and low-maintenance options. What to review: Care instructions, heat protection and approved location.
  • Granite: Individual natural-stone character. What to review: The actual slab, finish and stone-specific care.
  • Quartzite: Natural veining and variation. What to review: Confirm the material, finish, sealing guidance and fabrication details.
  • Porcelain slab: Thin profiles and a range of printed or solid looks. What to review: Edge treatment, fabrication, support and product approval for the application.

Quartz and quartzite are different materials. Also avoid treating every slab sold under a broad name as identical: inspect the selected surface and discuss its specific requirements.

For a closer comparison, read quartz versus granite, quartz versus quartzite or porcelain versus quartz. Those guides help narrow the choice before an in-person selection.

Replacing countertops while keeping your cabinets

Before committing to a new top, review whether the existing cabinets are stable, appropriately supported and arranged the way you want. Countertop removal can affect adjacent surfaces; the proposal should explain what happens to the backsplash, sink, plumbing connections and any damaged finishes.

If cabinet replacement is likely soon, compare doing the work together. A finished slab is shaped for a particular layout, and adapting it later is not guaranteed. Our kitchen cabinet page explains replacement planning.

Bring the sink and cooktop specifications into the conversation early. Their dimensions and mounting details influence the cutouts, supports and connections. Do not choose a sink only after the countertop has been fabricated.

The details that make a countertop look intentional

Slab layout and seams: Review how the pattern runs across the kitchen, where seams may be needed and how separate pieces relate. A small sample cannot show the entire slab's variation.

Edges: Compare the profile with the cabinet style and the material's fabrication requirements. Ask whether the quoted thickness is the slab thickness or the visual result of an added edge.

Waterfall ends and overhangs: These affect layout, material quantity, seams and support. Review seating and clearances as well as appearance.

Backsplashes: A short return, tile backsplash and full-height slab create different scopes. Decide how the top meets the wall and what happens to existing finishes.

Sinks and fixtures: Confirm the sink, faucet holes, accessories and appliance cutouts before fabrication. A final selection list helps avoid changes after the material is cut.

What affects countertop installation cost in Tampa?

Square footage is one part of the quote. Material selection, slab yield, layout, edges, cutouts, backsplash work, access and the condition of the supporting cabinets can all change the scope.

  • Material: Exact selection, finish, thickness and quantity
  • Fabrication: Template, cutouts, edges, seams and selected details
  • Removal: Existing tops, disposal and protection of adjacent finishes
  • Installation: Delivery, access, supports and fitting
  • Related work: Sink connections, backsplash, cabinet adjustments and repairs
  • Changes: Allowances, exclusions and approval of additional work

Ask whether the price includes all of the above or only the slab and installation. TGA provides a written estimate for the agreed project; we do not use a single square-foot rate as a promise for every kitchen.

From selection to installation

  1. Home visit and scope: Review measurements, existing cabinets, the surfaces being replaced and the changes you want. These inform the TGA 5-Star Estimate.
  2. Proposal approval and selections: Confirm the material, sink, edge and other details within the project's design and selection phase.
  3. Site readiness and template: Confirm the cabinets and required fixtures are ready for final measurements before fabrication proceeds.
  4. Fabrication coordination: The approved template and selections guide the fabrication partner's work.
  5. Installation and related work: Coordinate delivery, fitting, seams and the connections or finish work included in the proposal.
  6. Review and care: Review the finished scope and the selected material's care instructions.

Ask for a schedule that distinguishes fabrication from time in the home. Completion depends on the material, access and related work, so a one-day installation advertisement should not be read as a promise that every kitchen will be fully usable that day.

Vanity tops, outdoor kitchens and specialty surfaces

Bathroom vanity tops need the sink arrangement, faucet placement, wall fit and storage clearances resolved. Coordinate the top with the vanity rather than selecting them independently. See our Tampa bathroom remodeling services for a larger bathroom project.

Outdoor countertops need a product approved for the actual exposure and installation. Do not assume an indoor quartz or any other material is covered outdoors merely because it looks durable. Confirm sunlight, weather, support and care requirements before selection.

For solid surface, butcher block, concrete or another specialty finish, discuss availability and suitability with the team. The proposal should identify the exact material and who is responsible for each part of the work.

Care depends on the selected surface

Quartz should not be treated as heat-proof. Caesarstone's care guidance calls for protecting the surface from hot cookware and using suitable cleaning methods. Follow the instructions for the product you actually buy.

Natural stone does not have one universal sealing schedule. The Natural Stone Institute explains that many stones need no sealer and that the choice should suit the stone and application. Ask for the selected slab's care recommendations rather than assuming an annual treatment is always required.

Use the specified cleaning products and protection for each surface. Product and installation warranties should be reviewed separately, including exclusions and the contact for service.

Countertop questions

Common questions about countertop materials, installation, and care in Tampa Bay.

Can you replace countertops without replacing the cabinets?

Often that is the scope to evaluate, but the existing cabinets must be reviewed for condition, support and layout. Discuss the sink, backsplash, removal and related repairs before approving the project.

Which is better for my kitchen, quartz or granite?

Compare the selected quartz product and actual granite slab against the look, care requirements and installation details you want. Neither material is the best choice for every kitchen.

Does every natural-stone countertop need annual sealing?

No single interval applies to every stone. Ask for the selected material’s care guidance and whether sealing is appropriate. Quartz products generally have different care requirements from natural stone.

How long does countertop installation take?

The schedule includes selection, template, fabrication, fitting and any related work. A single installation-day estimate does not necessarily cover all the work needed to make the kitchen fully usable.

Can I use the same countertop outdoors?

Only if the exact product is approved for the intended exposure and installation. Confirm sunlight, weather, support and warranty requirements before choosing an outdoor surface.

Does a countertop project need permits?

Requirements depend on the full scope and jurisdiction, particularly if related plumbing, electrical or structural work is involved. TGA checks the requirements for the agreed project and address.
