A real shower replacement in Tampa runs about $5,500 to $18,000 in 2026, with most projects landing between $8,000 and $12,000. Plan on two to three weeks, not one day. That timeline covers demolition to the studs, new waterproofing, tile or panel walls, and custom glass. If a quote promises tomorrow's shower at half the price, you're buying a cover, not a replacement.

The difference matters more here than in most markets. Tampa showers fight hard water, year-round humidity, and slab foundations that punish shortcuts. A liner glued over a failing pan doesn't fix the leak, it hides it until water reaches your framing.

We're TGA Kitchens & Remodeling, a Florida-certified building contractor. You'll approve your new shower as a photorealistic 3D model, then one licensed team handles permits, plumbing, waterproofing, tile, and glass. No handoff from a salesperson to a subcontractor to a call center.

One boundary before we start. If you're removing a bathtub to gain a shower, that's a different project, see our tub-to-shower conversions page. This page is about replacing a shower you already have with one built from the studs out.

Why We Won't Glue Acrylic Over Your Old Shower

One-day shower companies are fast because they don't remove anything. They measure your stall, mold acrylic or PVC panels to fit, and bond them over your existing walls. Old tile, old backer board, old pan, everything stays put underneath.

That's fine if everything underneath is perfect. It rarely is. The most common failure we find behind old showers is missing waterproofing. That means tile set on bare drywall, or a pan with no membrane under it. Seal a molded panel over that and you've locked moisture in with your studs. The wall keeps rotting, you just can't see it anymore.

A true replacement works in the opposite direction. We demo to the studs, inspect framing and subfloor, then rebuild in the right order: pan, membrane, backer, finish. The result is new all the way through, not new on the surface.

To be clear, acrylic isn't the villain. A quality solid-surface panel system over fresh waterproofing is a legitimate budget choice, and we install them. The problem is the wrap method, new skin over walls nobody opened.

Tile, Glass, and Grout That Survive Tampa Water

Tampa's tap water measures 140 to 300 ppm of hardness, 8 to 17 grains per gallon, depending on the season. Dry-season water leans harder because more of it comes from groundwater. That mineral load spots glass, clouds fixtures, and eats at cheap grout. Your material choices should answer for it.

- **Porcelain over ceramic.** Porcelain absorbs less than 0.5% of its weight in water, so constant soaking doesn't faze it. Large-format tile also means fewer grout lines to keep clean. - **Urethane or epoxy grout.** Cement grout is porous, it drinks minerals and feeds mildew. Single-component urethane costs more per unit and spares you annual sealing. - **Low-iron tempered glass with a factory coating.** Hydrophobic coatings let hard-water spots wipe away instead of etching in. Tempered is required by code anyway; low-iron removes the green tint. - **An exhaust fan sized to the room.** Tampa humidity applies mold pressure twelve months a year. We vent fans outside, never into the attic.

Curbless Entries on a Tampa Slab

Curbless is the fastest-growing request on our 2026 shower quotes, and Tampa's slab-on-grade housing makes it a real construction decision. Zero-entry means the drain sits below the surrounding floor. On a slab, we either cut the concrete or build up the bathroom floor around the shower. Either way, budget roughly 20% to 30% above a curbed replacement.

While walls are open, we add solid blocking for future grab bars at no meaningful cost. A fold-down bench, a handheld spray on a slide bar, and a linear drain complete a shower that works at 40 and at 80. Planning that now beats retrofitting it after a hospital discharge.

Shower Replacement Costs in Tampa for 2026

Here are the honest ranges we're quoting in 2026, all including full demolition and new waterproofing:

- **Solid-surface panels, new pan, framed glass: $5,500 to $8,500.** The budget path done correctly, torn out and rebuilt, not wrapped. - **Porcelain tile, semi-frameless glass, new valve: $8,000 to $12,000.** Where most of our Tampa projects land, and consistent with what area homeowners report for mid-range work. - **Custom tile, frameless glass, niche and bench: $12,000 to $18,000.** Large-format or mosaic tile, upgraded valves, and heavy glass drive the top end. - **Curbless entry: add 20% to 30%** to any tier for the slab or subfloor work.

Three variables move your number most: tile complexity, glass spec, and whether plumbing relocates. Tile labor in the Tampa market averages around $12.50 per square foot and climbs quickly with patterns. Frameless glass is the sleeper cost, each panel is custom-fabricated to your finished tile, not pulled from a shelf. Moving a drain or valve adds rough-in work and an extra inspection.

Our quotes itemize demolition, waterproofing, tile, glass, and plumbing so you can see where the money goes. We also price a framing-repair contingency up front. If demo uncovers rot, you'll already know the number, no mid-project change-order ambush.

Demo to Glass in Two to Three Weeks, Flood Test Included

Before a tool comes out, you'll walk through the finished design in 3D at our Design Center. Tile, glass line, niche placement, all approved on screen, where changes cost nothing. Then the build runs on this schedule:

- **Days 1-2: demolition and inspection.** The old shower comes out to the studs. We check framing and subfloor and repair damage now, while it's cheap. - **Days 3-4: plumbing rough-in.** New valve, new drain, any line moves, with the permit inspection that goes with them. - **Days 5-7: pan, membrane, flood test.** We waterproof the assembly, plug the drain, and flood the pan for 24 hours. If the water level drops, we fix it before one tile goes up. - **Days 8-12: tile, grout, seal.** Mortar and grout need cure time between steps. Rushed cures are why corners crack in year two. - **Days 13-18: glass and trim.** Frameless glass gets templated off your finished tile, then fabricated, that wait is most of this window. Fixtures go in and the final inspection closes your permit.

That's also why one-day showers finish in one day: skip demolition, skip waterproofing, skip cure times, and nothing's left to wait for. It's not a process breakthrough. It's a shorter to-do list. We ran the same sequence on the spa-style master bath we built in Gulfport, across the bay.

Permits: Inside Tampa City Limits vs. Unincorporated Hillsborough

Whether you need a permit depends on what gets touched. The City of Tampa exempts leak repairs that don't replace fixtures, and new tile alone needs no building permit. But a real replacement almost always swaps the valve and drain, and that's permitted plumbing work. We file through the city's Accela Citizen Access portal; Construction Services answers questions at (813) 274-3100.

A Tampa mailing address doesn't guarantee city jurisdiction. Carrollwood, Citrus Park, Town 'N' Country, and Brandon sit in unincorporated Hillsborough County, which uses its own HillsGovHub portal. County subtrade permits start around $130, and residential reviews typically run 10 to 15 business days in 2026. Filing with the wrong authority is a classic DIY delay, so we verify your jurisdiction before submitting anything.

Inspectors check the work against the Florida Building Code, 8th Edition, the code in force for 2026 projects. Two rules do the heavy lifting. Site-built pans need a bonded waterproofing membrane meeting ANSI A118.10, carried at least 2 inches above the finished threshold. Any glass with an edge within 60 inches of the shower floor must be tempered safety glazing.

We hold Florida Certified Building Contractor license CBC1268077, so we build past the minimums. The 24-hour flood test isn't universally required, but we run it on every pan. Skipping permits isn't savings, either, unpermitted plumbing surfaces in buyers' permit searches and costs more to legalize later. Every TGA shower closes with a final inspection on record.

Tampa Shower Replacement Questions, Answered

How is this different from a tub-to-shower conversion?

A conversion removes a bathtub and builds a shower in its footprint, different plumbing, different layout questions, different pricing. If that's your project, start with our tub-to-shower conversions page instead. This page covers replacing a shower that already exists.

Do I need a permit to replace a shower in Tampa?

Usually yes, because the valve and drain get replaced, and that's plumbing work under city and county rules. Cosmetic jobs, regrouting, a new door on existing tile, don't trigger one. Either way, we handle the filing. It's our paperwork, not yours.

Can you replace just the pan and keep my wall tile?

We almost never recommend it. The pan membrane has to tie into the wall waterproofing, and cutting that connection invites leaks. If your pan failed, the lower walls usually took on water too. We'll tell you straight if your shower is the rare exception.

Is a one-day acrylic shower ever a good idea?

The materials can be fine; the method is the gamble. Panels bonded over unopened walls mean nobody verified what's underneath. If your budget points to acrylic or solid surface, choose panels installed over a full tear-out and new waterproofing. You'll spend somewhat more and skip the mystery.

How long is my bathroom out of commission?

The shower itself is down for the full two to three weeks. Your toilet and sink usually stay usable except during demo and rough-in days. We contain dust with plastic zip walls and clean up at the end of every workday.

Will my water heater keep up with a bigger shower?

Not always, rain heads and body sprays pull far more hot water than a standard head. We check your heater's recovery against your fixture picks during design. Sometimes the right fix is a thermostatic valve and efficient heads, not a new tank.

See Your Shower in 3D Before Demo Day

Every TGA shower starts as a photorealistic 3D model you approve before we order a single tile. You'll see your exact layout, glass line, niche, bench, not a stock rendering. Change your mind on screen, where changing it is free.

Our Design Center is at 3851 62nd Ave N, Suite A, Pinellas Park, FL 33781. From Tampa it's a straight shot across the Howard Frankland or Gandy Bridge. Put your hands on tile, glass, and grout samples before you commit to any of them.

Call (727) 800-4050 to schedule a design consultation. Bring photos of your current shower and any quotes you've collected, we'll give you a straight read on both.
